A Breakfast of Contrasts

On the one hand, I started my day with a chocolate chip oatmeal (I think?) cookie from Chick-fil-A that my hubby and daughter brought me last night (sadly, I was in the act of brushing my teeth when my hubby brought it to me). Because, hey, it was there and enjoyable to munch on while I was making part of my youngest’s lunch and unloading the dishwasher. Once I got everyone off to school, service site, and work, however–and once I’d finished cleaning the terrifying kitchen–I sat down with a bowl of shredded wheat, cut-up banana, and Craisins in 1% milk. Good times!

Speaking of good times, I finally finished my read-a-few-pages-before-bed book on Wednesday night, and I highly recommend Caroline Adderson’s Sunny Days Inside and Other Stories. (Which appears to be out of print, and that’s criminal. I just went to https://www.abebooks.com/ and ordered myself a ‘very good’ used copy for under $6 and free shipping–shoutout to my favorite sister for the tip!) It is a short story collection, yes, but also not quite. It’s actually the story of an apartment building during the first months of Covid, with separate apartments covered in separate chapters but some interaction among the characters. (Note–it takes place in Canada, which is only important because of the French mother and her son. In the U.S., a Latina mother and her son wouldn’t require any explanation, but unexplained French characters seem unlikely.) Each apartment’s story is told from the kids’ point of view, and honestly, they were all great. The French mother/son plot was one of my favorites (definitely the funniest for me), but the variety of situations felt authentic and the mix of emotions was poignant. Do yourself a favor and read this one!

On the home front, musical rehearsals are over and musical performances have begun, which means there’s a chance we’ll start seeing my senior again on a more regular basis. My formerly sick kiddos are finishing up their make-up work, the weather is beautiful (a mix of rain and sun, both with lovely fall temperatures), and tonight is leftover night, which means I only have to worry about a veggie. All is–or at least, many things are–right with the world!
